1958 Rates
The Federal Reserve lowered the federal funds rate by onequarter of a percentage point to 1 percent, bringing the rate to 1958 levels. The federal funds rate is the rate that banks charge other banks for overnight loans. The rate cut was an attempt to kick-start the still-sluggish economy. The Fed has lowered interest rates 13 times since early 2001.
