Freudenberg Acquires Comfortemp, C degree Brands
German nonwoven fabric maker Freudenberg Group has acquired the Comfortemp and C degree trademarks from Winston-Salem, N.C.–based Frisby Technologies Inc.
Both Comfortemp and C degree include products that have microencapsulated phasechange materials (mPCM) added to the polymer prior to fiber extrusion. Fabrics made from fibers that include mPCMs have temperaturecontrol properties and can be used in apparel, shoes and accessories.
Originally used as lining for astronauts’ gloves, mPCM is an insulating material that can slow heattransfer rates and boost heat capacity by regulating heat in response to the temperature next to one’s skin.
Freudenberg has been researching and developing mPCM-related products, and the acquisition allows the company to expand its business in that area. —Alison A. Nieder
