Los Angeles Fashion Week Fall I 2003: Corey Lynn Calter
It’s about time Corey Lynn Calter stepped into the spotlight and did a solo runway show. The designer shied away from the cameras at the end of her show on April 5 at Smashbox Studios in Culver City, but her kitschy, 1960s secret agent–themed collection had no problem grabbing attention.
Calter’s “agents” looked the part with bouffant hairdos, thick black lashes, and heavily shadowed and lined eyes. Gold owl accessories—pendants, necklaces and earrings—added a quirky touch. But hair, makeup and accessories aside, Calter struck a good balance between mod and modern by offering wearable clothes for girls who crave that retro flavor.
Calter kept a tight range of looks. For day, it was silk blouses and wool sweaters worn with ice cream–colored plaid, tweed and herringbone jackets, trousers and pleated miniskirts with just enough fringe on the hips and hems. Mini dresses were short and sweet. Silk versions came in polka dots and in a heart-and-striped print. Others were offered in cutesy plaids or tweed. Polishing off the looks were Calter’s oh-so-innocent cardigan sweaters, fastened with gold sweater chains.
For evening, there were more mini dresses accented with gold rings and two scrumptious strapless, satin cocktail numbers—one in chocolate with a marabou-lined evening coat and another in pink with a marabou-lined capelet. —Joselle Yokogawa
