Los Angeles Fashion Week Fall I 2003: Michelle Mason
Local designer Michelle Mason gave her Mason collection its runway debut alongside her eponymous Michelle Mason line on April 3 during Mercedes-Benz Shows L.A. at the Downtown Standard Hotel.
For Fall 2003, Mason featured a blend of ruggedness and femininity with cowboy shirts, jeans, cords and mini dresses, as well as army sweaters, hoodies and other clothes that can be worn outdoors.
“I’ve been going out to the desert a lot,” said the former Richard Tyler prodigy.
The designer has also been gleaning influences from 1940s-era film noir and films such as “The Hunger.” The metallic mandarin jackets, wavy black-and-white striped gowns, kimono- sleeve dresses and corset dresses in her couture collection reflected such inspirations.
Mason was one of four designers subsidized by Mercedes-Benz show producers.
“This is fantastic,” she said. “There’s so much talent blossoming in L.A., and they need some recognition.” —Robert McAllister
