Owens and Otis Go Digital
Los Angeles-based designer Rick Owens is a man of his word. And he proved it recently when he kept his commitment as a design mentor to the 2003 senior class of Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles.
Owens, recently named creative director for the French furrier Revillion, is currently busy in Paris setting up his design studio for the fashion house. On top of that, the designer recently showed his ready-to-wear collection during the Paris shows in March.
As a design mentor, Owens gave the Otis students a design project at the beginning of the school year and worked personally with them to critique and follow their progress. Owens continues his commitment to his students overseas, viewing their work digitally via the Internet and by receiving DVDs.
The final results of this and other designer mentor projects will be featured on the runway during Otis’ annual scholarship fund-raising gala in Beverly Hills on May 3. Sources said Owens plans on being there and “wouldn’t miss his students’ finale for the world.” — Joselle Yokogawa
