Wage Warrior
Living-wage law advocate Madeline Janis-Aparicio has been named to the Los Angeles Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) by the Los Angeles City Council. Janis- Aparicio was one of several candidates nominated by Mayor James Hahn. She is the executive director of the Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy (LAANE), a research organization that promotes paying a living wage. Despite Janis-Aparicio’s appointment by a unanimous decision, two councilmembers voiced their opposition to the new CRA member. Councilwoman Jan Perry questioned whether Janis-Aparicio, because of her position with LAANE, would hold back development, and Councilman Nate Holden said Janis- Aparicio’s appointment could represent a conflict of interest because her advocacy of living wages has put her at odds with developers in the past.
