L.A. Fashion Week Spring '03: San Paredes and Andraegonzalo
Forget It, Jake, a former supply store turned hip boutique near the heart of Chinatown, was the setting for a joint fashion show on Nov. 5 featuring imaginative and modish looks by on-the-rise designers Andrae Gonzalo for Andraegonzalo and Paul Magalad for San Paredes.
For Spring 2003, Australian-born Magalad focused on layering deconstructed fabrics and adding details such as hand stitching and embroidery for an abstract aristocratic feeling. A red reconstructed novelty tee paired with black ruched miniskirt, black-and-white plaid apron top with red stitching paired with yellow boy bottoms, and a lightblue halter dress with hand-embroidered ruffles were some of the outfits that caught the crowd’s attention.
Gonzalo presented retro-glamour athletic looks such as a rose-colored mini-wrap tennis skirt with satin shell, and jade-colored boy shorts with a flower-printed tulle shell and animal-print muscle T-shirt. He also dabbled with an ’80s influence by infusing off-the-shoulder styling into some pieces, such as a butterfly camisole worn underneath a mesh blouse. A standout piece was a fuchsia tulle dress with blush-colored slip.
Miss Chinatown and her court came by to help kick off the fashion show, which followed dancers from the San Gabriel Chinese Cultural Association performing the traditional lion dance. —Claudia Figueroa
