L.A. Fashion Week Spring '03: Jennifer Nicholson
Father Jack was absent, rehearsing for a play, but the Los Angeles debut of Jennifer Nicholson’s “Love Letters” collection on Nov. 2 still didn’t disappoint.
“Fun, girly, sexy and playful” was the focus of her clothes, which are “part Andy Warhol–, part beach-influenced.” That meant the return of dresses with lace overlays, cascading ruffles and dramatic drapes. Some of her 1960s-influenced looks were pastel- colored shifts, mod-inspired mini-dresses with contrast trim and side pockets, collarless tailored jackets and metallic-gold-trimmed butterfly jackets worn with double-pocket pants. The designer went tech-y with a silver leather zip-up jacket and silver sequined tuxedo pants. Artful touches were key to her collection. There were sequin columns on dresses, skirt hems with chiffon insets, and all-over-fringe pants and skirts worn with baby-doll tops.
On hand at the private Venice art gallery venue was sculptor Robert Graham, who created the 25-ton bronze doors for the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, and actress Helena Kallianiotes, who starred with Jack Nicholson in the 1970 classic “Five Easy Pieces.”
So far, the collection, also previewed during New York Fashion Week, can be found at Jennifer Nicholson’s Pearl boutique on Montana Avenue in Santa Monica, Calif. —Nola Sarkisian-Miller
