L.A. Fashion Week Spring '03: Jared Gold
It was a perfectly delightful evening of magic tricks, musical performances and cake at Jared Gold’s carnival cabaret showing of the designer’s Black Chandelier and Jared Gold Couture collectionshellip;until somebody decided to toss one of the mannequins (wearing a Black Chandelier outfit) out of a 5th-story window. (No one was hurt.)
It all went down on Nov. 5 in an open loft space just above the Palace Theater in downtown Los Angeles.
Indeed, a line of mannequins sporting highlights from Black Chandelier seemed secondary to the circus-like show: a singing performance by Jared Gold Couture–wearing Dame Darcy playing banjo and singing saw; the Houdini-esque magician Christopher Wonder with his jump-roping, juggling, ball-balancing, stilted sidekick; the fire eater; and the spooky rock tunes from the band The Centimeters.
Black Chandelier highlights included a lime-green zip-up jacket worn with a coral flared trouser; a white button-up shirt with a shoe screen and tie, paired with a light-green A-line skirt; and an aqua-blue cowl-neck screened top and skirt with zig-zag hem.
The collection, overall, seemed a happy and casual take on Spring, but certainly not without the designer’s quirky touches.
It’s fair to say that a Jared Gold show is hardly ever boring and, as one of the last shows of Los Angeles Fashion Week, this party was, well, the icing on the cake.—Joselle Yokogawa
