L.A. Fashion Week Spring '03: Eduardo Lucero
Two words could sum up designer Eduardo Lucero’s collection: All woman. The designer showed his Spring 2003 collection on Nov. 4 at Smashbox Studios in Culver City, Calif. After taking a break from the runway last season, he was back to show what he does best—make women look like women.
“You see all those girls?” he said of his models after the show. “They are my inspiration. They’re all sexy and curvy.”
This season didn’t have a collective theme or influence, “it was just about being pretty and tranquil,” Lucero said. “The edgy stuff just doesn’t feel right to me right now. The world is edgy enough already.”
Evening ensembles, cocktail dresses and glamour-oozing gowns in black, ivory and blush did share those signature “Eduardo-esque” touches: see-through lace, sparkling sequins and beading, and a fit to enhance every curve.
Lucero intended a “tropical” feel for a group of tangerine-colored twill dresses and a tapered trouser shown with a silk leaf-print blouse sexified with a restrictive tangerine corset. A few citrus-green beaded and sequined numbers—including a mini-halter dress and a red floor-length slip dress edged with hot-pink lace—were, in a word, wow! Noteworthy was a black and white floral wrap dress with a very deep V-neckline. Equally noteworthy was the fact that Lucero has returned to wholesaling his line—but, he emphasized, only to a very select number of stores. —Joselle Yokogawa
