S.F. Academy of Art Taps Maze

Former Harper’s Bazaar fashion editor Gwen Mazer has joined the fashion department faculty of San Francisco’s Academy of Art College as lifestyle coordinator/advocate for the Fall 2002/Spring 2003 terms. In her newly created post, Mazer reports to Gladys Perint Palmer, director.

Mazer is credited with creating Harper’s Bazaar’s ultra-chic retail section, “Bazaar.” She also served as creative director at Esprit from 1978 to 1981 and was marketing director for Italian designer Nazareno Gabrielli.

In addition, Mazer made her mark in retail during the early ’90s, opening two boutiques, Gwen Mazer Collections and Narcissa Boutique, in San Francisco and New York, respectively. A few years ago, Mazer founded Total Image Management, a company that provides corporate and personal image consulting. Macy’s, Gump’s, the Clift Hotel and Wells Fargo Bank are among her clients.

Getting Mazer to join Academy of Art College’s staff proved to be a challenge for the school’s director. “I’ve been trying to get Gwen to join since I was hired in 1995,” said Palmer.

This fall, Mazer is teaching “Interpreting and Reporting Fashion” with Palmer, as well as providing guidance to fashion students.

“I hope to engage the students in ways that provide them with the opportunity to benefit from the knowledge and experience I have gained from years of working in the fashion industry,” said Mazer. —Claudia Figueroa
