L.A. Fashion Week Spring '03: Jeremy Scott
“Everyone is someone in L.A.” That was the song playing during Jeremy Scott’s runway show on Nov. 2 at MOCA’s Geffen Contemporary Museum. And that certainly seemed to be the case as hoards of people crowded the front entrance to get inside the scenester event. Unfortunately, many got shut down—literally. To gain crowd control, organizers were forced to bring down the metal wall, shutting out anxious spectators. And those not seated (and still trying to enjoy the social hour in the cocktail area) were swept out of the venue.
Those who did see the show were treated to an underwater futuristic fantasy. The recently transplanted Los Angeles designer repeated his New York runway show for the local crowd—which appreciated the show’s relentless California theme.
Jane Fonda would certainly appreciate Scott’s version of sexy Barbarella-esque mini-dresses and space suits. And his skimpy suede and chiffon bathing suits—well, they’re certainly not made for cooling off in the water, but any woman who wears them had better be prepared to cool off overheated male admirers. On the same note, Scott’s fantastical frocks looked whimsical and wonderful on the runway—his watercolor silk gowns breezed weightlessly through the air like glowing jellyfish in a magical ocean—but on dry land, the woman who wears these dresses should expect to be the talk of the town. —Joselle Yokogawa
