American Apparel Taps Bailey for VP

Changes are afoot for Los Angeles-based T-shirt maker American Apparel, with the company recently hiring Martin Bailey as vice president of operations.

Bailey, who is the former director of manufacturing services at Fruit of the Loom, has 18 years of production operations experience working for such companies as Alstyle Apparel, Volunteer Knit Apparel and the Beltex Underwear Co.

In his new position, Bailey will be in charge of production planning, purchasing, sourcing, product development and quality assurance departments for the company.

“We brought Marty to American Apparel for one simple reason: He’s a T-shirt manufacturing genius,” said American Apparel senior partner Dov Charney.

Bailey, who began his new position last month, said he plans to help streamline the vertical operation’s production division.

“I am excited about the prospect of proving that by delivering an excellent product in a timely manner it is still possible to succeed as a domestic manufacturer,” he said in a recent press statement. —Claudia Figueroa
