Growth Underground
Los Angeles’ underground economy—including under-the-table-pay unskilled jobs in apparel—is growing, according to the Economic Roundtable, a local research firm. The group compared employment data from state payroll figures and workers’ surveys conducted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics and found the underground economy could range from 9 percent to 29 percent of the city’s overall economy.
