California's Next Generation: Los Angeles Trade-Technical College
The Los Angeles Trade-Technical College (LATT) fashion design graduation ceremony nixed the mortar board and gowns in favor of ball gowns, double-layer body suits and other elaborate fashions designed by the students at the school’s Fashion Center. The event, held May 17 at LATT’s Grand Theater, had the theme “Somewhere in Time” and featured the works of the 40 graduates in nine clothing categories, including swimwear, childrenswear, denim, sportswear for men and women, and gowns.
Looks ranged from the formal, including a taffeta gown with a beaded lace appliqueacute; center created by Bianca Solozano, to the hip, as represented by a his-and-hers set consisting of plaid bottoms and corduroy jackets with contrast piping by Tanya Huling Tang.
Among the students winning awards at the ceremony were Tess Zhou, who snagged the first-place prize for the “Somewhere in Time” theme category with her gold-painted denim dress trimmed in fur, and Erica Herandez, who took the first-place title in the gown category for her sheer stretch dress with boa trim and lace appliqueacute;. Honors in the general categories went to Rafael Hernandez for creativity and Chinami Kariya for her technical expertise.—Nola Sarkisian-Miller
