California's Next Generation: Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising
The Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM) presented its Debut 2002 fashion show on March 23 at Santa Monica Airport’s Barker Hangar, honoring its graduates and presenting scholarships to current students, while showcasing the design art of its students.
FIDM’s annual fashion show is designed to specifically highlight the design work of the school’s third-year advanced study program graduates in both fashion design and theatre costume design, with the fashion design students creating collections based solely on personal aesthetics, while the theatre costume design students create costume collections based on specific themes. The theme this year was “A Tribute To Movies, Theatre and Fashion.”
This year’s show, emceed by Johnny Grant, the honorary mayor of Hollywood, opened with a tribute to film fashion designers, featuring costume styles based on the movies “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” “Ali,” “Moulin Rouge,” “Planet of the Apes,” “Pearl Harbor” and “Zoolander.” The remaining collections were presentations of menswear, kids and womenswear, covering all seasons.
FIDM is a coeducational, specialized, private college with campuses in Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego and Orange County, Calif. —Darryl James
