Pacheco Steps Up to Bat for Modac
Los Angeles Councilman Nick Pacheco, who represents part of the Fashion District in his 14th District, is appealing to the city’s Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) for partial funding of the proposed Museum of Fashion Designers and Creators (MODAC).
Pacheco is requesting $25,000 from the city’s general fund as well as an undetermined amount from the CRA to help launch MODAC, which has been searching for a permanent home to house thousands of California fashion-related items. Museum founder Irene Kasmer said MODAC is in need of funding to store items in addition to a permanent home for the collection.
Kasmer and her supporters initially wanted to use the old Herald-Examiner building for the museum’s home but that building is now being eyed for office space, with the YMCA as a possible tenant.
Kasmer launched the concept of a fashion museum way back before Mayor Tom Bradley’s time in office and won the support of Bradley and other city officials, but changes in city administration and other projects kept the museum on the back burner.
In a letter to the CRA, Pacheco said he will also be appealing to the Central City Association and the California Fashion Association for assistance.
The CRA is expected to hear the requests for funding in the coming weeks. —Robert McAllister
