TALA Recognizes Next Generation
Designer Estevan Ramos gave the keynote address at Textile Association of Los Angeles’ (TALA) annual scholarship luncheon on Nov. 14 in the California Mart Fashion Theater.
The event recognized students from American Intercontinental University, Brooks College, Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM), Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, Otis College of Art and Design, West Valley Occupational College and Woodbury University.
Ramos, owner of his own Estevan Ramos clothing company, spoke off the cuff about his career in the industry, which began shortly after he switched from studying architecture at the University of Southern California to studying fashion design at FIDM. He won the Bob Mackie Scholarship at FIDM and was recruited to design for Los Angeles-based Steel Jeans. From there, he went on to design for such local labels as L.A. Gear and B.U.M. Equipment before striking out on his own.
“I see endless opportunities here [in Los Angeles],” said Ramos. “It’s a sportswear mecca.”
Ramos encouraged the students in the audience to start out at an established company rather than look to start their own business right after graduation.
“I always tell students, youUniversity of Southern California should go work for other companies—make your mistakes with their money,” he said.
Students from each college were invited to present their sketches and completed garments in a competition for scholarship funds presented by Steve Needleman on behalf of the Anjac Fashion Award, Celeste Dickenson on behalf of the Celeste Dickenson Award and George Schwartz on behalf of the George Schwartz Scholarship Fund. —Alison A.
