L.A. Fashion Week Fall 2002: San Paredes
Australian fashion designer Paul Magalad made his U.S. debut on April 15 with his “urban-postmodern-inspired” San Paredes collection, which was presented as part of a party at the Echo Club in Los Angeles’ Echo Park section. The affair featured some of the top deejays in Los Angeles, including DJ Panic and DJ Angelique, who also served double duty as models for the clothing.
The music was loud and continuous in the club before the fashion display began with little fanfare. The show itself was short and to the point. Magalad presented a small sampling of his collection as more of a parade than an actual fashion show, with seven models hitting the runway in succession, returning with the designer in tow to end the exhibition.
Magalad, who has garnered notoriety in his native Australia and Asia, said he draws his inspiration and materials from the synthetic clothing of the 1970s. He recently joined the Coalition of Los Angeles Designers (CLAD) with his new collection, which is distributed by the Mad Machinists Group. —Darryl James
