L.A. Fashion Week Fall '02: Independent Designers at Star Shoes
Star Shoes’ Paul Devitt wanted to tap into Los Angeles’ fashion scene, so the entrepreneur decided to host a series of fashion shows at his Hollywood boutique featuring some of the most industrial independent designers in the city. The first of these shows during fashion week took place on April 12.
Oskar De La Cruz, Kime Buzzelli, Brian Lichtenberg, Heza by Aimee Brown and The Gaming Crowd were the contemporary designers who presented their Fall 2002 collections on a narrow-isle runway surrounded by an intimate crowd.
The show’s standout pieces included Heza’s lace dresses with flower appliqueacute; and wool slacks with matching jacket with ruffle collar and De La Cruz’s deconstructed multicolored spandex “Mexican Goddess” dresses. Buzzelli, who owns Show Pony, a boutique in the Echo Park section of Los Angeles, used fringes and scarves to create a collection that was more 1920s-era flapper than 1960s-era Edie Sedgwick. Lichtenberg offered a green multicolored dress that will no doubt find a window spot at Diavolina on La Brea Avenue, where the designer’s line is carried. And, The Gaming Crowd served up four-in-hand silk ties that are not just for equestrian lovers. —C.F.
