Gen Art Names Fresh Faces for 2001
Gen Art, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to showcasing emerging talent in fashion, film and the visual arts, will present its annual showcase of young emerging West Coast designers on Nov. 1 at the Los Angeles Theatre in downtown Los Angeles.
The show, titled Fresh Faces, will feature 12 emerging West Coast designers in womenswear (Corey Lynn Calter, Development, Josh & He Yang, Martin Martin, Rami, O Maillots de Bains and Shawn), menswear (Eisbar) and accessories (Hand Maid, Monika, Pent MFG and Tres Flores). The designers were selected by a committee of professionals in the fashion community.
Justine West, program manager of Gen Art Los Angeles, expressed optimism about the upcoming show.
“Because of all [the selection committee’s] great choices, I think we have an amazing lineup this year and I think this year’s show will be the best [since the show’s inception],” said West.
The event will present the apparel designers’ pieces in a runway fashion show and the accessories in an art gallery–styled presentation.
This marks Gen Art’s fourth Fresh Faces show on the West Coast. In the past, the event has featured local designers including Cornell Collins, Ina Celaya, Jared Gold, Prototype, Lynn Lugo, Josephine Loka, Single, Del Rosario, Grey Ant, Rojas, Michelle Mason and Alicia Lawhon.
To be considered for the show, designers must have completed at least one prior collection and have been in business less than seven years.
Gen Art was founded in New York in 1993 and expanded to Los Angeles in 1995. Fresh Faces is presented on both coasts, with the East Coast edition also taking place at the beginning of November. —Darryl James
