New York Fashion Week Spring '02: Alicia Lawhon
Alicia Lawhon is perhaps best known for her quirky mix-and-match style, and this season, she continued that tradition. The designer showed her Spring 2002 collection on Sept. 10 at the Ukrainian National Home, and with a focus that was African and tropical and contained a pinch of her own native Mexico, put her best foot forward.
Lawhon’s taste for vibrant colors, patterns and vintage style worked perfectly on pieces she designed with a 1969 African poppy seed print reproduced exclusively for her collection: A wide-leg pant with a vintage necktie belt; a ruffle-sleeved dress belted with macrameacute; even a men’s trouser.
A more grown-up and romantic side surfaced with pretty white and black gauze and silk tops paired with cute circle skirts or wide-leg pants; deconstructed silk matka suitings in black, brown and white; and two stunningly bright hand-dyed gauzy dresses in orange and yellow.
For men, Lawhon went for a silk-screened recycled Hawaiian print shirt, Mexican-style striped poncho and screen-printed T-shirts with original works from artists Roger Herman and Nick Lowe.
And as if that weren’t enough, Lawhon also introduced her new shoe collection, tightening the look even further. —Joselle Yokogawa
