Guatemala Endorses Global Compliance Program
The Guatemala Apparel and Textile Commission, Guatemala’s national apparel trade association, has endorsed the Worldwide Responsible Apparel Production (WRAP) certification program.
“This move by the Guatemala Apparel and Textile Commission [Vestex Comision Agexpront] is another step forward for WRAP,” said Joaquin “Jack” Otero, chair of WRAP’s independent board of directors.
“The WRAP factory certification model allows factories to verify compliance with socially responsible business practices. And it does this without hurting the competitiveness of certain factories,” Otero said.
The WRAP program is an independent factory-based certification initiative that requires participating manufacturers to demonstrate ongoing compliance with 12 WRAP production principles, namely: compliance with laws and workplace regulations, prohibition of forced labor, prohibition of child labor, prohibition of harassment or abuse, compensation and benefits, hours of work, prohibition of discrimination; health and safety, freedom of association, environment, customs and drug interdiction. —Andrea Bermudez
