Sterling Exits Acrylic Business
Charlotte, N.C.-based -based fiber and chemical company Sterling Chemicals Inc. announced it is shuttering its acrylic fiber commodity textile program after a series of cost reduction programs failed to revive the business.
The closure eliminates all commodity textile fibers from the company’s offerings. Sterling Fibers, the company’s textile division, will continue to manufacturer MicroSupreme, as well as its technical fibers CFF, Conductrol, BioFresh and WeatherBlock.
The closure means about 160 jobs will be eliminated from the Pace, Fla. manufacturing facility, as well as offices in North Carolina, New York, New Jersey and the marketing offices in California. An office in Santa Rosa, Fla. will remain open with a reduced staff to market the company’s technical fibers. —Alison A. Nieder
