Fashion's Next Wave: Los Angeles Trade-Technical College
Los Angeles Trade-Tech students reached into the world of literature for inspiration at the college’s semi-annual Gold Thimble Fashion Show, held recently on campus in the Grand Theatre. Fashion Design students used characters from works ranging from Otilia Meza’s “La Malinche” to science fiction novel “The Phantom Menace” to classics including Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” and du Maurier’s “Rebecca” to put together ornate period costumes as well as futuristic looks for the show’s main event, titled “Reading Into Fashion.”
Gold Thimble Awards were doled out in eight categories. First-place winners were Daniel Marche, menswear; Livie Mota, swimwear; Sherri Jacobson, children’s; Aura Avecilla, junior sportswear; Angelique Morales, after five; Antonio Iniguez, eveningwear; Lyudmila Landov, coats; and Sirouch Petrosian, Reading into Fashion.
Outside of the theme category, students went for classic but updated styles for eveningwear while staying in an urban mode for contemporary apparel, using camouflage prints, heavy fabrics and other variations. About 70 students graduated from the fashion department this spring. —Robert McAllister
