The Los Angeles fashion district received a $1.2 million grant from the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) to upgrade sidewalks, access ramps and lighting; the grant is part of the MTA’s Transportation Improvement Program, which promotes improvement of regional transportation, including walking; the funds will go to the Fashion District Business Improvement District (BID)’s Streetscape project, created to enhance the district’s sidewalks and encourage walking; the BID will also contribute $100,000 and the city will contribute $300,000 to the project; other district improvements include transit shelters, benches and planting more trees; the project is slated for completion by the end of 2003.
