Los Angeles Fashion Week Fall 2001: Magda Berliner
“It’s not a political statement, it’s just fun,” said Magda Berliner, referring to the mustache she wore to the debut of her Fall 2001 collection on April 3. “I did a lot of male/female looks.”
For this collection, Berliner opted for a more relaxed setting—a dim and intimate West Hollywood venue called North—rather than a big runway show. The designer hosted a champagne party, which allowed her guests to sip champagne and check out her Fall showing in New York via video monitor.
“I wanted to show everyone who wasn’t in New York the show,” she said. “And a girlfriend took some wonderful pictures backstage.”
Those pictures were taped up on the walls next to the monitor for a fashion installation-like showing. Berliner also gave fashiongoers a live presentation of her new line; models wearing versions of a cowl-neck, sleeveless, flared dress—one silhouette, different fabrics—walked around throughout the evening and reinforced the designer’s belief that more important than showing a lot of looks is just keeping the look strong. —Joselle Yokogawa
