Los Angeles Fashion Week Fall 2001: Michelle Mason

Michelle Mason maintains a humble attitude even though she’s earned herself an enormous amount of respect within the Los Angeles fashion community. It’s no surprise that the designer continues to gain recognition for her designs. Her design style has remained consistent since she launched the line four years ago—and that’s what her devoted fans have come to expect from her collections.

“I tend to do a lot of menswear fabrics,” said Mason. “I do a lot of masculine cuts, but more fitted and body conscious.”

Mason said she likes to blend masculine and feminine influences in her designs.

“I think in all of the collections I’ve done, I try to incorporate that,” she said.

“This collection is kind of a retrospective of everything I’ve done in the past—but it’s only been four years.”

On March 31, the designer held her show at ARC:101 Studio in downtown Los Angeles, where a packed house enjoyed her Fall/Winter collection.

Menswear was this season’s main influence, as was Mason’s love for Victorian times. Khaki and black corduroy suitings were paired with wine colored or khaki silk polka dot blouses; wide-leg leather or wool trousers, long coats and skirts with hook and eye closures or raw hems screamed of Mason’s signature style; leather corsets and sleeves added that perfect edge and her striped menswear-inspired women’s shirts were nothing less than classic. —Joselle Yokogawa, Fashion Editor
